John C. McNutt, 96, of Main St., Conneaut, died peacefully on Wednesday, April 17, 2013 at the Ashtabula County Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. John was born August 1, 1916 in North Kingsville, Ohio to Edward P. and Lelia Fern (nee Poore) McNutt. He attended Conneaut Schools and graduated from Conneaut High School Class of 1934. John attended Gannon University in Erie, PA, Pennsylvania State Extension in Erie, PA and took courses sponsored by General Motors at the University of Detroit. He married Grace Warner on October 17, 1937. Mr. McNutt was employed with J.C. Penney, Pittsburgh and Conneaut Dock Company, sales manager for Emhoff Motors and Gill Chevrolet-Buick and the Ohio Department of Liquor Control. After retirement he worked for Venture in Conneaut. Mr. McNutt was a former member and past president of the Conneaut Kiwanis Club and a 60 plus year member and past worshipful master of Free and Accepted Masons Evergreen Lodge #222. He was a 50 year member of Conneaut Chapter #76 Royal Arch Masons and served as High Priest in 1951 and again in 2001 and 2002. John was a member of the Conneaut Council Royal and Select Masters; and Cache Commandery, Knights Templar. He was a 32nd Degree Mason with the Valley of Cleveland; and a member of the Provincial Grand Lodge of the Royal Order of Scotland, the Cleveland York Rite College No. 13 and was also a member of the El Kadir Grotto, Ashtabula. John was a member of First Congregational United Church of Christ. He was preceded in death by his wife, Grace (Warner) McNutt on October 26, 1991; sisters, Evelyn Smith; Elizabeth A. McNutt; and brothers, James Edward and Rollin G. McNutt. He is survived by two daughters, Lettie J. (Joseph) Yusko of Conneaut. and Lee E. (Richard) Sidaway of Concord, OH; son, Robert V. (Sandi) McNutt of Wendell, N.C.; Seven grandchildren; Eight great-grandchildren; sister, Prudence A. McNutt; and his close friend and dancing partner, Violette M. Fuller of Conneaut. Funeral services will be held, Saturday, April 20, 2013 at 10 AM, at the THOMPSON-SMITH-NESBITT FUNERAL HOME, 345 MAIN ST., CONNEAUT, with Pastor Joyce Shellhammer, of First Congregational United Church of Christ, officiating. Burial will follow at East Conneaut Cemetery. Family will receive friends at the funeral home on Friday, April 19 from 5 to 8 PM where Masonic Services will be held at 7:45 PM. Should friends desire memorials in John's name may be given to the First Congregational United Church of Christ, 211 Buffalo St., Conneaut or the F & AM, Evergreen Masonic Lodge #222, 246 State St., Conneaut. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
