Russell H. "Woody" Wood Obituary

Saybrook Township- The family of Russell H. Wood, bids farewell their beloved father, brother and uncle, who peacefully passed away on Thursday, January 25, 2024, at the Lantern of Saybrook.



Russell, affectionately known as "Woody," was born on December 31, 1927, in Millstone, West Virginia, to George W. and Leola (nee Newell) Wood. Serving with honor in the United States Army during World War II, he exemplified the resilience and dedication of his generation. After his military service, he found enduring love and companionship with Violet Marie Sheppard, whom he married on May 19, 1949, in Spencer, West Virginia. Violet preceded him in death on February 16, 1985.



Woody was a devoted member of the Ashtabula Church of Christ, where his faith and community ties remained strong. Having worked for many years at Ashtabula Rubber, he retired to pursue his passion for raising beef cattle on his farm.



Russell H. Wood is remembered not only for his service to his country but also for the love and commitment he showed to his family and community.



He will be dearly missed by his children, Margaret Spann, Polly (George) Vogel, Lorrie Wright, Randy (Linda) Wood, and Rusty Wood; brother, Kenneth (Iris) Wood; 11 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren; 4 great-great-grandchildren.



Woody was preceded in death by his parents; dear wife, Violet Wood; daughters, Linda Kay Downey and Judith Ann Wood; siblings, Ray Wood, in infancy, Erma Craddock, Faye Wood, Arlona Brannon, Paige Wood, Peg Morrow and Frank Wood.



Friends and family will be received at the Thompson-Smith-Nesbitt Funeral Home, 345 Main St., Conneaut, Ohio on Sunday, January 28, 2024 from 4PM-6PM. A graveside service will be held Monday, January 29, 2024 at 12:00PM at Swank Cemetery in Spencer, West Virginia where military honors will be observed.



Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of the Western Reserve, 1166 Lake Ave., Ashtabula, Ohio, 44004.
