With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Mary Colleen (McDermott) Colby, a light in the lives of many, on January 25, 2024. Born in Conneaut Ohio on September 14, 1932, to parents Francis and Violette Adelle (Quinn) McDermott, Mary Colleen led a life full of love, kindness, and compassion. She graduated from Conneaut High school in 1950 where she was a cheerleader. Mary worked at Allied Resins, Marx Toys and the Conneaut Kmart before retiring. She operated a small business baking and decorating cakes. Her specialty honey cream cakes with buttercream frosting adorned hundreds of amazing wedding, anniversary, and birthday cakes. It was her joy to watch so many enjoy the fruits of her craft. She was a 40-year breast cancer survivor and with her family participated in many activities supporting breast cancer awareness. Mary Colleen was a member of the Catholic Daughters of America and the Irish Colleens. She enjoyed bowling, golfing, shopping, and playing kickball with her grandchildren. Mary was the life of the party. She loved to celebrate every holiday, especially St. Patrick's Day! Mary's steadfast and caring nature was manifested in her extensive family who survived her. She was a loving mother to her children David Colby, Nicholas J. (Dawn) Colby, Jr., Tommy (Jen) Colby, Joey (Kelly) Colby, Janey (Joseph) Hosey, Timmy (Stephanie) Colby, and Michael (Julie) Colby; grandchildren, T.J. (Gena) Colby, Celeste and Gia Colby, Ryan and Grace Colby, Violette and Emily Hosey, Ruth and Max Colby and Olivia and Macey Colby; and great-grandchildren, Hailey, Alex, Jacob and Maddix. Predeceased by her father, Francis McDermott, her mother, Violette Adelle (Quinn) McDermott, her only sibling Thomas McDermott and her beloved husband, Nicholas Colby Sr., Mary's legacy of love and resilience has left immeasurable impact on all who had the privilege to know her. Viewings for Mary Colleen will be held on Tuesday January 30, 2024, from 5 pm to 7 pm, and Wednesday January 31, 2024, from 10 am to 11 am at the Thompson-Smith-Nesbitt Funeral Home. A memorial service, celebrating her life, will be held Wednesday January 31, 2024, at 11 am at the same location. These gatherings will provide a space for those who loved her to pay their respects, share their memories, and find comfort in their collective loss. Mary's unwavering strength, her boundless love for her family, and her indomitable spirit will continue to inspire and guide us. She will be greatly missed and lovingly remembered by all who knew and loved her.
