Obituary of Hazel L. Venable

Please share a memory of Hazel to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Hazel Venable died Wednesday, August 6 after a lengthy illness. Born March 19, 1938 in Conneaut, OH to Hazel (Thompson) and Henry L. Dewey, Hazel was a 1956 graduate of Conneaut High School. After earning her BS in Education from Kent State University, she taught fifth grade and Title One reading in the Buckeye School District and worked as a substitute teacher in the Conneaut School System and at Cabrini Elementary in Conneaut. A lifelong learner, Hazel shared her knowledge with Sunday School classes at Lake View and New Leaf United Methodist Churches; no subject was too difficult, from the Middle East to the Vietnam War, and how they might relate to a Christian life well lived. A loving mother, she modeled for her children many joys in life, from travel (she visited many US states, as well as Korea, Denmark, Germany, and Australia) to books and new foods and experiences. She was preceded in death by her parents and by Archie Dewey, her brother, and Henrietta Correll, her sister. Hazel will be deeply missed by her loving husband, John E. Venable, Jr.; her children Charla Dain (David Bishop) and Stephen Dain; stepchildren John R. Venable (Lee Jendry), Deborah (Terry) Duncan, Sondra Venable (Argyle Wolf-Knapp), and Susan (Harold, deceased) Travis; grandchildren Christopher Duncan, Alex Travis, Brandon Collins, Mia Collins, Sharayah Werner, and Zachary Werner; and many nieces and nephews. A celebration of life will be held at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, August 13, 2014 at New Leaf United Methodist Church, 283 Buffalo St., Conneaut. A gathering will take place at the church prior to the service at 3 p.m. and dinner will be served following the service. The Thompson-Smith-Nesbitt Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 345 Main St., Conneaut is entrusted with arrangements. Online guestbook and condolences available at www.thompsonsmithnesbitt.com
